The campaign | Stop Estuary Airport

We are campaigning against an airport on or near the Thames Estuary because it would be:

• Unaffordable for the UK
• Responsible for concreting over much of Kent
• A source of significant noise and pollution
• In the wrong location
• Devastating for wildlife

I want to post fun and interesting things, but sadly the rest of the world keeps wanting to annoy and frustrate me. The pie-in-the-sky proposals for a hub airport on the Thames Estuary or North Kent Marshes is one of the latter. I really hope the Conservative’s very own BoJo the Clown is made to eat custard pie over this.

Ka-BOOOM!

The Liberal Democrats are calling for plans for a Thames Estuary airport to be scrapped following a report into a shipwreck full of explosives off Kent.

The American cargo ship SS Richard Montgomery sank off Sheerness in 1944, containing 1,400 tonnes of explosives.

Lib Dem Julian Huppert said without a “plan to deal with this mess there’s no way” the plans will get off the ground.

Engineers found it would not stop construction, a spokesman for the Mayor of London said.

Explosive ship wreck, fog, flocks of migrating birds, and lots of vociferous objectors. Of course Boris will get his folly.

BBC News – Kent rail links “may become part of Boris’s empire”

A Kent MP is meeting London transport bosses over fears that the city may take over the running of some of the county’s train services.

Michael Fallon, who represents Sevenoaks, is concerned that his constituents could end up with a worse and more expensive service.

Boris Johnson believes routes to Dartford and Sevenoaks will improve if they are managed from London.

But Mr Fallon says many passengers cannot hold Mr Johnson to account.

BoJo’s at it again. He can’t keep his mitts off stuff that doesn’t concern him. He’ll have to go. Please, Londoners, vote for anyone else in the May election. Anyone but Boris, please.

Stop the Estuary Airport | Email Boris

Help us to oppose the estuary airport scheme by emailing Boris direct.

BoJo is at it again.

Visit the site linked above, which is supported by Medway Council, Kent County Council and the RSPB, and send an email to the Mayor of London registering your displeasure. I have.

I’ve only just discovered the North Kent Marshes, despite having lived in the area for over two decades. I like the fact there is such a large area of wilderness, sandwiched between the Thames and Medway. I like the fact the unique landscape of marshland is home to all kinds of wildlife, and to hardy souls who live in scattered communities across the Hoo Peninsula. It saddens me that the Mayor of London persists in trying to destroy this place, with some pie-in-the-sky dream of enticing some 75 million Chinese to buy duty free tat as they swap planes for an onward journey to who knows where!

BBC News – Lord Foster behind Kent airport plan

We are the only country in Europe that can have a west-facing Americas port at Liverpool and an east-facing – China, India, Europe – port in the estuary.

Or perhaps an east-facing port at Grimsby, or Harwich, or …

We don’t want or need a new airport in the Thames Estuary. A liquefied natural gas terminal, one of the most important sites for over-wintering birds, and the fact a new airport will effectively kill the existing London airports and smaller airfields as well as upset the French and Dutch airspace, plus having already been given the red light by the UK government, means this idea should be dead in the water.

BBC News – PM rules out Thames Estuary airport plan

The government has ruled out proposals to build a major airport in the Thames Estuary or Kent to increase flight capacity for London.

The Prime Minister told the House of Commons the government had no plans to construct a new airport in the area.

See? An outbreak of common sense at Westminster, too!

I emailed my local MP about this very issue only yesterday. I got a letter in the mail today — today, mark you, 24 hours later — agreeing with me and stating she would be supporting all calls to reject any proposals for an airport at Hoo or in the Thames Estuary.

Tracey Crouch MP has gone up a notch in my estimation. She might be a Tory, I didn’t vote for her, but she seems to be okay.
