Over the past few years I have found much solace in various YouTube channels. This first collection of my favourites is mostly about mechanical things.

I am linking each subheading directly to each channel’s page on the YouTube site, rather than select a typical video or thumbnail. The description is that provided by the channel’s own information panel, which is why it often reads weirdly.

If I felt it worth the effort I would have done screen grabs as illustration, but I am too lazy these days to do such jobs properly. Sorry.

HubNut

HubNut is all about Celebrating the Average and the unusual in the fascinating world of the motor vehicle. Ian is the main host, having started the channel in 2013 as a side-project, while working as a freelance motoring journalist. Ian edited titles such as Classic Jaguar, Retro Japanese and Rolls-Royce and Bentley Driver while publishing videos about the resurrection of his 1972 Invacar. The channel went full time in 2019, during which time he met Miss Hubnut, who has become an excellent co-presenter. The channel documents their experiences with their fleet, as well as adventures, road tests and thoughts on motoring in general.

Up‘n’Down

Beaucoup de mots, peu d’action…apparently.

(To explain, the channel documents the shenanigans of a TVR and Citroën fanatic. Kitch, his nickname, loves Citroëns, particularly various BX models and he also owns an SM, the jammy git. He is also the pre-eminent Australian Ford specialist in England (a HubNut in-joke, as Ian imported a Ford AU Fairmont from New Zealand … oh, just go and watch that story on his own channel).)

(If you enjoy watching skilled people exercise their craft this channel is for you. Welding, followed by lots of priming and sanding is involved.)

This is the place for all the lunacy and crazy ideas from Bad Obsession Motorsport. We’re a leading race and rally car preparation company specializing in projects that are just a little bit mad. Well, maybe a lot mad but you get the point. Follow our adventures with Project Binky, the quest to create a 2 litre, turbocharged, 4WD Austin Mini. We’re building a mobile home from home car transporter in the Escargot, and we’ve built and raced the most entry level car we could get our hands on in Bargain Racement.

Bus Grease Monkey

Traveling [sic] vintage bus mechanic lots of bus stuff and Detroit Diesel 2 stroke videos.

(All a bit bald, but since the channel was set up, Scott and his family have moved to Tennessee, and built a home and bus repair shop on their property. They are also very keen on solar power. Videos could do with better editing, but can still be strangely satisfying to watch.)
