Making a scene

My secondary school, which I attended from 1976 to 1980, had a particularly well-stocked library. Being the nerd that I am, I was drawn to the 20th century history section, avidly reading all kinds of works on the Second World War. It was in this library that my lifetime obsession with the Battle of Britain was born. But, there was also another book that caught my attention.

All these years later, I cannot recall the title, author or publisher. Occasionally, I try to search the internet for likely volumes, but to no avail. All I remember is it was hardback, printed in full colour throughout, and consisted of wonderful photos. The thing was, the photos were all of scale model aircraft, set in detailed realistic dioramas. It was utterly fascinating.

Professional modelmaking

I fell into professional modelmaking by accident. Various changes in my circumstances had meant my graphic design career path – such as it was – was very much declining.

When at a society meeting, a friend asked if I would build a model railway coach kit for him. He was impressed with the finished model, and suggested I talk to the kit manufacturer to see if they might find me more work. I did, and they did. Before I knew it, I had several months of work backed up.

I had become a professional modelmaker.

The rise (and fall?) of social media

A ghost in the machine.

This rambling nonsense was inspired by a conversation on a forum. One of the members was patiently explaining how best to use Facebook, but admitted they also cross-posted the same information to a web site. That struck me as a strange thing to do, doubling all the effort just to ensure the content could be seen by people that didn’t occupy Facebook. Anyway, rambling nonsense…
